Des Moines [Des Moines] BrE NAmE
the capital and largest city of the US state of ↑Iowa. It began as Fort Des Moines in 1843 and developed into a centre of the ↑Corn Belt. The city also grew because of coal mines in the area. It was named after the Des Moines River which runs through it.
