Rhode Island [Rhode Island] BrE NAmE
the smallest US state, also called the Ocean State. It is in the north-east of the country on the Atlantic coast. It was named after the Greek island of Rhodes and was one of the original 13 states. ↑Providence is the capital and largest city. Rhode Island has a fishing and boat-building industry and produces jewellery, electronic products and grapes. Popular tourist attractions include ↑Newport and Samuel Slater’s Mill in Pawtucket.
